How Musicians Can Push Through the Anxiety of Taking Action

First of all, welcome to my first blog! I am quite excited to share my thoughts with you all.

From the early stages of our lives, we are often told what not to do and taught what is considered right or wrong. This plays a substantial role in our upbringing, especially since, as children, we lacked the ability to fully grasp and articulate the "what" or "how" questions. When we start learning music, we are constantly reminded of rules, theories, and how to make the "right" interpretation of each piece. These lessons are usually accompanied by traditional and methodical learning techniques.

This kind of teaching is absolutely necessary and inevitable at the beginning. However, the real challenge arises when we start to realize that there are multiple ways of achieving a certain style, interpretation, technique, or success. This understanding comes with experience, learning, and years of practice. At this point, many musicians find themselves grappling with a mix of thoughts and questions about "how" to move forward. These doubts can create an overwhelming anxiety around taking action.

After spending years adhering to what we’ve been taught—being told how to do things and how not to do them—musicians often reach a point where they are consumed by fears such as, "What will others think of me?" or "What if nobody likes what I do?" Some even think, "I am doing what I was told, but deep down, it doesn’t feel right." This mindset can become a major barrier, preventing musicians from achieving their goals and realizing their full potential.

The key point is to trust yourself in the things you are good at and take consistent, daily actions toward the things you wish to achieve. Confidence doesn’t just appear magically; it grows from recognizing your strengths and seeing yourself make progress every day. In fact, this feeling of progress is the very definition of success.

Another important aspect is to remember that no one has the perfect answer. The world of music is vast, and every musician has their unique journey. You don’t need to fit into someone else’s mold. By exploring different styles and approaches, you can discover your voice and build a career that feels authentic to you.

It’s also crucial to shift your perspective on failure. Instead of viewing it as a setback, see it as a step to growth. Many great musicians, not only musicians, have failed countless times before reaching success. Each mistake teaches a valuable lesson and brings you closer to mastery. There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.

Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of passion and persistence. The love you have for music is what drives you, or It doesn’t even have to be for music, you could see the music as a tool to achieve your life goals, and consistent effort over time will bring results. Even on days when progress feels slow, remember why you started and keep moving forward. Actually most of people can’t answer the question of “why”, but let’s save that for another time.

Thank you for reading my first blog. My only purpose is to inspire you to take that next step, no matter how small it may be. Let’s keep pushing forward together!
